A big bass caught flipping Lake Hatchineha

One of my favorite lakes to fish, Lake Hatchineha offers an abundance of beautiful shoreline cover to fish. I frequent this lake throughout the year but never more than I do in the Fall and Spring. As the water levels begin to come back up on the Kissimmee Chain, this lake’s shoreline becomes very productive as most of its shoreline cover is too shallow through most of the year when the lakes are at low pool. Like most lakes, when the water comes up, the bass begin to prowl the shallows seeking out food and better water quality: Water that is around green vegetation will be more oxygenated than that of stagnate offshore water.

This time of year, the best thing to do on Lake Hatchineha is get your boat in the shallow cover! Don’t be scared to get up in there where they’re at and get a bait in front of em!

Flipping into thick matted cover will produce bites

My top picks for right now are surface baits like a hollow body frog or devils horse worked along thick edges of grass, reeds, or pads. Cast parallel to your weed line and slowly work back to the boat. If that’s not working, I’ll go to a moving sub surface bait like a Gambler Big Ez and cast through pads and grass. Usually by noon these techniques have slowed down quite a bit and it’s time to go flipping. Flip small creature baits into thick vegetation like Water Hyacinth or pads. Another great technique year round is flipping outside reed lines where the reeds make a point.

If none of this works; at least you got to spend a day on one of the most beautiful lakes around here.
